| 7/31/2008 | Jerred Smithson, C, Nsh | The Nashville Predators have signed center Jarred Smithson to a two-year, $1.4 million contract extension through 2011. Analysis: The deal announced Thursday will pay the 29-year-old forward $725,000 in 2009-10 and $750,000 in 2010-11. Smithson, a free agent signed by Nashville in 2004, has 45 points in 241 games since making his NHL debut with Los Angeles in 2002. |
| 7/31/2008 | Ville Koistinen, D, Nsh | The Predators announced Thursday that defenseman Ville Koistinen was awarded a one-year, $700,000 deal in arbitration. Analysis: He was a restricted free agent this summer and filed for arbitration before the July 5 deadline. The 26-year-old had 17 points in 48 games in his first NHL season with Nashville last year. |
| 7/31/2008 | Antoine Vermette, LW, Ott | Vermette signed a $5.25 million, two-year contract extension with the Ottawa Senators on Thursday after a season in which he had career highs in goals and points. He earned nearly $1.1 million last year. Analysis: Vermette had 24 goals and 53 points while appearing in 81 games last season. He was among the league leaders with a 57 percent faceoff win rate. In 297 career games with Ottawa, Vermette has 71 goals and 139 points. |
| 7/30/2008 | Mark Parrish, RW, Min | The Wild bought out the remaining three years of Parrish's contract on Wednesday. The right wing, who scored 35 goals and had 34 assists with the Wild, is now a free agent. Analysis: It was an abrupt end to a disappointing return home for the hard-nosed winger. Parrish starred at Bloomington Jefferson High School and St. Cloud State University before playing his first seven years in the NHL with Florida, the Islanders and Los Angeles. He signed a five-year deal worth more than $13 million to come home to the Wild in 2006. But he was bothered by injuries and never seem to fit in coach Jacques Lemaire's system in two years there. |
| 7/30/2008 | Valtteri Filppula, C, Det | Filppula will be back with Detroit next season, signing a $15 million, five-year contract with the Red Wings on Wednesday that keeps him under contract through the 2012-13 season and avoids a salary arbitration hearing. Analysis: Filppula, 24, had career highs with 19 goals and 36 points last season. Then, he played in all 22 playoff games and scored in the Stanley Cup-clinching win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last month. Detroit took the Finland native in the third round of the 2002 draft, and he has 29 goals and 54 points over two-plus seasons in the NHL. |
| 7/30/2008 | Pascal Leclaire, G, Cls | The Blue Jackets re-signed Leclaire, a restricted free agent, on Wednesday to a three-year contract through the 2010-11 season. Analysis: Leclaire, 25, is coming off his best season, going 24-17-6 with a 2.25 goals-against average and nine shutouts in 54 games. He ranked second in shutouts and seventh in GAA. His record was the best in franchise history and his shutout total nearly doubled the previous club mark of five set by Marc Denis in 2002-03. After the season, Leclaire helped Canada win a silver medal at the world championships, going 4-0 with a 2.00 GAA and a shutout in four contests. |
| 7/30/2008 | Mark Parrish, RW, Min | The Wild have waived Parrish with three years left on his contract. Minnesota general manager Doug Risebrough says Parrish was simply a victim of the NHL's salary cap. He was paid $2.5 million last season and would have cost the team a salary cap hit of $2.65 million this season, bringing the Wild about $2.1 million short of the cap. Analysis: Parrish scored 35 goals in two seasons with Minnesota, including just 16 in 66 games this past season. If he isn't claimed off waivers Wednesday, the Wild will likely buy out the rest of his contract for two-thirds of his salary. If he's picked up on waivers, his new team would take over his salary and the total cap hit. |
| 7/29/2008 | Nate Thompson, C, Bos | The Bruins signed Thompson, a restricted free agent, on Monday. Analysis: The 23-year-old Thompson played in four NHL games for the Bruins. He has been with the team's AHL affiliate in Providence since 2003. The Alaska native played in 216 AHL games, including 10 playoff contests. |
| 7/29/2008 | Steven Stamkos, C, TB | Stamkos signed a three-year, $2.625 million contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who already have penciled in the No. 1 pick in the NHL draft as the team's second-line center. The 18-year-old's standard entry-level contract includes a yearly base salary of $875,000, as well as a maximum of $8.55 million in performance bonuses that could make the deal worth up to $11.175 million. Analysis: Stamkos had 100 goals and 97 assists in 124 games over two seasons for Sarnia in the Ontario Hockey League. |
| 7/29/2008 | Martin St. Pierre, C, Bos | The Bruins signed St. Pierre, a restricted free agent, on Monday. Analysis: Boston acquired St. Pierre's rights from the Chicago Blackhawks in a trade for Pascal Pelletier last week. The 24-year-old St. Pierre played in five NHL games last season and spent time with the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate in Rockford, Ill. |
| 7/28/2008 | Jay Bouwmeester, D, Fla | Bouwmeester agreed to a one-year contract extension with the Florida Panthers on Monday, one day before the sides were scheduled to go to salary arbitration. Analysis: Bouwmeester will make between $4 million and $5 million next season, nearly doubling his salary, but the sides couldn't agree on a long-term deal that the Panthers sought. Bouwmeester scored a career-high 15 goals last season, tied for sixth among NHL defensemen. He also continued to be one of the most dependable players in the league, playing all 82 games for the third straight year and logging 2,252 minutes, by far the most in the NHL. |
| 7/26/2008 | Glen Murray, RW, Bos | The Bruins announced Saturday have bought out the final year of veteran right-winger Glen Murray's contract. The Bruins owed Murray $4.15 million for the upcoming season. The terms of the buyout were not immediately known. Analysis: Following the buyout, Murray becomes an unrestricted free agent. The 35-year-old right wing, a 16-year veteran, has scored 337 goals with 314 assists in 1,009 regular season games. He was in his second stint with the Bruins and was their first-round pick in 1991. He's also played with Los Angeles and Pittsburgh. Murray had 17 goals and 13 assists in 63 games with Boston last season. |
| 7/26/2008 | Shaone Morrisonn, D, Was | The Capitals signed Morrisonn to a one-year contract on Saturday. Analysis: The 25-year-old Morrisonn played his third full season with the team in 2007-08, totaling 10 points and 63 penalty minutes in 76 games. He also played during the Capitals' playoff run, collecting an assist in seven contests. The Vancouver native was acquired from Boston in 2004. |
| 7/26/2008 | Pierre-Marc Bouchard, RW, Min | The Minnesota Wild re-signed Bouchard to a five-year, $20.4 million contract on Saturday. Analysis: Bouchard's new contract includes a no-trade clause for the first two years. A first-round selection by the Wild in 2002, the 5-foot-10, 172-pound right wing had a career-high and franchise-record 50 assists last season. The 24-year-old Bouchard also had 13 goals and a career-best 63 points in 81 games. Bouchard also had two goals and two assists in six playoff contests. |

During his eight seasons, he has 127 goals and 195 assists in 578 games with the New York Rangers, Edmonton, New York Islanders, Philadelphia and the Coyotes. |

| 7/25/2008 | Pekka Rinne, G, Nsh | The Predators signed Rinne to a one-year contract extension Friday. Analysis: Rinne led the American Hockey League in wins at 36 with Milwaukee last season. The 25-year-old goalie has appeared in three career NHL games with Nashville since 2005. |
| 7/25/2008 | Marek Svatos, RW, Col | The Avalanche signed Svatos to a two-year contract, avoiding an arbitration hearing Friday. Analysis: Svatos scored 26 goals last season despite missing the final 16 games with a torn knee ligament. He tied Wojtek Wolski for the club lead with six game-winning goals. |
| 7/24/2008 | Mathieu Darche, LW, Buf | Journeyman minor league left winger Mathieu Darche signed a one-year, $575,000 contract with the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. Analysis: Darche, 31, was an unrestricted free agent, who had a career-high 22 points (seven goals, 15 assists) in 73 games with Tampa Bay last season. He has spent most of his career in the American Hockey League since breaking into the NHL as an undrafted free agent with Columbus in 2000. Darche also played for Nashville and San Jose.
