8/6/2008 Shannon Brown, G-F (Cha) The Charlotte Bobcats signed guard Shannon Brown to a one-year deal Wednesday.

Analysis: The 6-foot-4 Brown played in 21 games for Cleveland and Chicago last season and had two stints in the NBA Development League. Brown was the 25th overall pick by Cleveland in 2006 after leaving Michigan State following his junior year. Brown was limited to 23 games as a rookie because of a leg injury, and the Cavaliers declined to pick up the option year on his contract and traded him to Chicago in February in the Ben Wallace deal.
8/6/2008 Steve Novak, F (LAC) The Los Angeles Clippers acquired Novak, a forward who can shoot from the perimeter, in a deal with the Houston Rockets on Wednesday. In return, the Rockets will have the option to exchange second-round picks with the Clippers in the 2011 NBA draft.

Analysis: Last season, his second in the NBA, the 6-foot-10, 220-pound Novak averaged 3.9 points while playing in 35 games for Houston. He went 34-of-71 (.479) from 3-point range. Selected 32nd overall in the 2006 NBA draft, Novak had set a Marquette record for career 3-pointers made (354), and finished 10th in school history in career points (1,567).
8/5/2008 Jordan Farmar, G (LAL) Farmar, the NBA's only Jewish player, showed his dribbling, shooting and slam-dunking skills at a clinic in southern Israel on Tuesday for Jewish and Arab kids.

Analysis: The 21-year-old Farmar is the guest of the Peres Center for Peace, founded by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Shimon Peres, now Israel's president, to encourage cooperation between Israelis and Palestinians. Farmar is the first Jewish player in the NBA since Danny Schayes - son of Hall of Famer Dolph Schayes - retired in 1999.
8/5/2008 Rodney Stuckey, G (Det) Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars announced Tuesday that Detroit exercised its team option on Stuckey's contract through the 2009-10 season.

Analysis: Stuckey, the 15th overall pick in the 2007 draft, appeared in 57 games last season, averaging 7.6 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 19 minutes per game.
8/5/2008 Arron Afflalo, G (Det) Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars announced Tuesday that Detroit exercised its team option Afflalo's contract through the 2009-10 season.

Analysis: Afflalo, the 27th overall pick, appeared in 75 games last season, averaging 3.7 points.
8/5/2008 Earl Boykins, PG (Cha) Boykins signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal to play with Virtus Bologna of the Italian league. The 32-year-old point guard will be the highest-paid player in Italy for the 2008-09 season. He also will participate in the sponsorship and marketing income of the team.

Analysis: The 5-foot-5 Boykins, who played at Eastern Michigan, has been in the NBA for 10 years, and averaged 9.4 points. He has played for the Bobcats, New Jersey Nets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic, Los Angeles Clippers, Golden State Warriors, Denver Nuggets and Milwaukee Bucks.
8/4/2008 Kwame Brown, F-C (Det) The Detroit Pistons announced Monday that they have signed free agent center Kwame Brown.

Analysis: Team president of basketball operations Joe Dumars told The Associated Press last week that Brown will be paid $4 million next season. Brown has an option for a second season for another $4 million. He averaged a career-high 10.9 points and 7.4 rebounds during 2003-04, with Washington, which drafted him No. 1 overall in 2001. However, he averaged just 4.8 points last season. Brown was traded to Memphis in February as part of the Pau Gasol deal.
8/4/2008 Paul Pierce, G-F (Bos) Police detained Pierce in handcuffs during a weekend traffic stop on the Las Vegas Strip, but released him without issuing a summons. A spokeswoman for the Celtics said Monday the team and Pierce had no comment.

Analysis: Las Vegas police said Monday that Pierce was handcuffed briefly after emerging "a little agitated" from a vehicle he was driving around 3 a.m. Sunday. Pierce, who led the Celtics to the championship this year and was MVP of the finals, was given field sobriety tests and a Breathalyzer, which registered below the legal limit. Pierce was not arrested. A valet was called to drive Pierce's car, and Pierce took a cab back to where he was staying.
8/4/2008 Carlos Arroyo, PG (Orl) Arroyo, who spent the last two seasons with the Orlando Magic, has become the latest NBA player to bolt overseas, signing with an Israeli team.

Analysis: The 29-year-old Arroyo signed a one-year deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv. "I'm very happy we've completed this signing," Maccabi coach Effi Birnboim said Monday on the club's Web site. "Arroyo is a player of the highest standard and has been our top priority for a while." Arroyo has averaged 7.0 points and 3.3 assists per game during his seven-year career. He averaged 6.9 points and 3.5 assists for the Magic last season, primarily off the bench.
8/4/2008 Tarence Kinsey, G-F (Cle) Looking to add backcourt depth, the Cavaliers signed Kinsey on Monday.

Analysis: Kinsey split last season between Memphis and Fenerbahce Ulker Istanbul in the Turkish league. In his second season with Memphis, he averaged 3.6 points and 8.7 minutes in 11 games. In Turkey, the 6-foot-6 Kinsey averaged 9.2 points in 14 games. As a rookie with Memphis in 2006-07, Kinsey made 12 starts in 48 games, averaging 7.7 points.
8/4/2008 Louis Williams, G (Phi) The 76ers re-signed Williams on Monday, keeping a key member of Philadelphia's first playoff team in three years. The deal was reportedly worth more than $25 million over five years.

Analysis: Williams, who was a restricted free agent, averaged 11.5 points and 23.4 minutes in 80 games off the bench last season. He contributed 12.0 points per game in the postseason, as well. The 21-year-old Williams was selected out of high school with the No. 45 overall pick in the second round of the 2005 NBA draft. He's averaged 7.2 points, 2.2 assists and 1.5 rebounds in his first three seasons.
8/1/2008 Josh Howard, G-F (Dal) Howard has been arrested in his hometown in North Carolina after police said he was drag racing on a Winston-Salem street.

Analysis: Howard is charged with speeding 94 mph in a 55 mph zone, careless and reckless driving, and speed competition. He has been released from the Forsyth County jail on a written promise to appear in court Sept. 23. Police said an officer saw a black Lexus and a silver Volkswagen speeding along U.S. 421 late Thursday night. The officer stopped the Lexus, and Howard was identified as the driver. Authorities didn't identify the other driver.
8/1/2008 Nick Fazekas, F (LAC) Fazekas and the Clippers have agreed to the withdrawl of the team's qualifying offer, making Fazekas an unrestricted free agent.

Analysis: Signed by the Clippers as a free agent on March 18, Fazekas appeared in 26 games last season, averaging 4.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 0.4 assists in 10.3 minutes.
7/31/2008 Luol Deng, G-F (Chi) Chicago general manager John Paxson considers Luol Deng a big part of the Bulls future after the restricted free agent signed a six-year contract with the Chicago Bulls.

Analysis: The team did not release details of the deal announced Wednesday, but it is reportedly worth $80 million, with $71 million in guaranteed money. The 23-year-old Deng averaged 17.0 points and 6.4 rebounds last season. Originally drafted by the Phoenix Suns in the first round in 2004, the Bulls acquired Deng's draft rights in a draft-night deal.
7/31/2008 Emeka Okafor, F-C (Cha) Okafor has signed his six-year, $72 million free-agent deal with the Charlotte Bobcats.

Analysis: Okafor agreed to terms early Tuesday after nearly a month of negotiations. He signed the richest contract in team history Thursday and said in a statement that he's looking forward to playing under new coach Larry Brown. The 6-foot-10 Okafor has averaged 14.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 2.0 blocks in four seasons in Charlotte. He was the expansion team's first draft pick and the second overall selection in 2004.
7/31/2008 Sonny Weems, G-F (Den) Weems had surgery Thursday to repair a sports hernia.

Analysis: Weems, a second-round pick who was acquired by the Nuggets on draft night, is expected to fully recover in time for the start of training camp on Sept. 30. The Chicago Bulls picked Weems 39th overall out of Arkansas, then traded him to the Nuggets for a 2009 second-round pick. Weems played five games for the Nuggets' Summer League team, averaging 9.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 22 minutes.
7/31/2008 Brian Skinner, F-C (LAC) Skinner, a first-round pick of the Los Angeles Clippers 10 years ago, signed with the team on Thursday.

Analysis: The Clippers reached a deal with the 6-foot-9, 255-pounder, who averaged 3.3 points and 3.6 rebounds in 66 games for the Phoenix Suns last season. Skinner has averaged 4.9 points, 4.9 rebounds and 0.5 assists in 538 career NBA games with eight teams. He was the 22nd overall pick in the 1998 draft and played his first three professional seasons with the Clippers.
7/30/2008 Luol Deng, G-F (Chi) Restricted free agent forward Luol Deng and the Chicago Bulls have agreed to six-year contract that could be worth as much as $80 million. The Bulls e-mailed a news release Wednesday afternoon announcing the ``contract signing of Luol Deng.'' No details on the deal were released.

Analysis: Deng averaged 17 points and 6.3 rebounds last season, while shooting 47.9 percent. That marked a drop from 2006-07, when he scored 18 points a game with 7.1 rebounds, while making 51.7 percent of his shots. Deng had rejected a five-year contract extension last October that was worth $57.5 million.
7/30/2008 Will Bynum, G (Det) The Detroit Pistons have signed free agent guard Will Bynum. Terms of the deal were not released.

Analysis: Bynum averaged 11.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists in the Las Vegas Summer League. The 6-foot, 185-pound guard played last season for Maccabi Tel Aviv of the Israeli League and averaged 10.6 points, 1.9 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
7/30/2008 O.J. Mayo, G (Mem) Mayo picked up a high compliment when Kobe Bryant called him the 'whole package,' according to the Los Angeles Times. Mayo and Bryant went at each other during Team USA's preparation and managing director Jerry Colangelo said Bryant had the upper hand early before Mayo got better.

Analysis: Mayo's showing against the league MVP bodes well for his future.
