Milledge, batting .248 with 11 homers and 40 RBIs this season, has gone 10-for-27 (.370) with four homers and seven RBIs, as well as seven runs scored, during a seven-game hitting streak. |
| 8/7/2008 | Mike Napoli, C (LAA) | Napoli concluded his minor league rehab assignment with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday night and will be activated Friday for the series opener against the Yankees. Analysis: Napoli, sidelined since July 6 because of irritation in his right shoulder, went 8-for-14 (.588) with a homer and four RBIs in five starts with the minor-league club. Jeff Mathis has worked behind the plate in Napoli's absence, but it is still unclear how playing time will be split between the players once Napoli returns. Analysis: Guerrero has gone 9-for-27 (.333) with three homers and 10 RBIs over his last seven games. Overall, he is batting .287 with 20 homers and 64 RBIs this season. Guerrero became the fourth player in Angels history to hit 20 or more home runs in five consecutive seasons, joining Garret Anderson, Tim Salmon and Brian Downing. |
| 8/7/2008 | Jon Lieber, RP (ChC) | Lieber, on the disabled list with a strained right foot, was back at Wrigley Field after giving up three runs and five hits in three innings Tuesday during a rehab outing with Class-A Peoria. Analysis: Lieber hasn't pitched since July 10. "Physically, I'm fine. It's just building up strength," said Lieber, who is not sure when he will return. Lieber is 2-3 with a 3.43 ERA in 25 relief appearances for the Cubs. |
| 8/7/2008 | Mark DeRosa, 2B (ChC) | DeRosa hit a grand slam during an eight-run burst in the third inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Houston Astros 11-4 Wednesday. Analysis: It was DeRosa's fourth career grand slam, and the second baseman finished with two hits and five RBIs after going 3-for-5 with three RBIs the previous day. DeRosa is hitting .278 with 12 homers and 63 RBIs this season. The Cubs open a three-game series with St. Louis on Friday, and DeRosa has hit .232 with two homers and nine RBIs in 31 career games versus the Cardinals. |

Analysis: Spilborghs is experiencing normal soreness after playing catch, but he is making steady progress on his injury. The outfielder has been out since July 9, and the Rockies have gone 14-10 in his absence. He was batted .314 with six homers and 33 RBIs in 72 games before he was hurt. |
| 8/7/2008 | Eric Milton, SP (NYY) | Milton threw off a bullpen mound and is expected to pitch in minor league games later this month. Analysis: The former big leaguer was signed by the Yankees to a minor league contract on July 11, and he continues to work his way back from elbow ligament replacement surgery, a procedure he underwent in June 2007. He went 0-4 with a 5.17 ERA in six starts with Cincinnati last season. |
| 8/7/2008 | Victor Zambrano, RP (NYY) | Zambrano allowed a broken-bat single over four scoreless innings in his first start for the Gulf Coast League Yankees. Analysis: The former major league pitcher, recently signed to a minor league contract, struck out three and walked one. The right-hander was last in the major leagues in 2007, when he pitched in 13 games for Toronto and Baltimore. He is 45-44 with a 4.64 ERA. |
| 8/7/2008 | Hideki Matsui, DH (NYY) | Matsui began a running program Thursday for his sore left knee. Analysis: After hitting 10 home runs on 58 pitches during his second consecutive day of batting practice on the field, Matsui ran about 90 feet six times in the outfield. Matsui will face a big test on Friday - seeing how the knee reacts. He had his rehab program shut down last month when the knee swelled even more after two days of batting practice. Matsui opted against having surgery last month with the hope of rejoining the Yankees this season. |
| 8/7/2008 | Michael Barrett, C (SD) | Barrett underwent surgery to repair his orbital bone, as well as facial fractures, on July 13, according to the Padres' official Web site. Prior to this operation, Barrett's original timeline was pegged at four-to-six weeks, though it's unlikely the catcher plays again before September. Analysis: During the four-hour surgical procedure, permanent titanium plates were placed in Barrett's forehead, on the bridge of his nose and around his right eye. He also had 32 staples placed in his head. Barrett was injured during a loss at Colorado on July 2, when he fouled a ball off of his face. He was hitting .202 with two homers and nine RBIs in 30 games before he was hurt. |
| 8/7/2008 | Mariano Rivera, RP (NYY) | Rivera showed no signs of an aching back in saving New York's 5-3 win over the Rangers on Wednesday night. Analysis: Rivera, who hadn't pitched since Friday because of back spasms, threw a one-hit ninth for his career-best 27th consecutive save this season. "The last thing on my mind was my back," Rivera said. "I was just trying to get people out." He is 4-4 with a 1.46 ERA in 43 relief appearances overall. |
| 8/7/2008 | Ryan Church, RF (NYM) | Church's return for the remainder of the season appears doubtful, according to the New York Daily News. After a series of evaluations, he has yet to be cleared to play. Church is scheduled for another evaluation either Thursday or Friday. Analysis: Church has been out since July 6 due to effects from a pair of concussions, but Mets manager Jerry Manuel told the newspaper he wasn't optimistic about a possible return for the left fielder. Church didn't speak with reporters on Wednesday, but after taking batting practice with the team and fielding balls in the outfield, he didn't give any indication to be more positive about the upcoming evaluation. |
| 8/7/2008 | Scott Eyre, RP (Phi) | The Phillies acquired Eyre from the Cubs on Thursday, sending right-hander Brian Schlitter to Chicago in the trade between NL division leaders. Analysis: Eyre, who went 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in 19 games over two stints with the Cubs, was designated for assignment earlier this week. The left-hander, who didn't allow a run in his first 14 games (nine innings), has held left-handed hitters to a .259 batting average. Eyre set a Cubs record with 33 consecutive scoreless appearances over 23 2-3 innings, a span that extended from Aug. 16, 2007 to June 13. Eyre was in the final season of a three-year contract. |
| 8/7/2008 | Chad Bradford, RP (TB) | The first-place Rays acquired Bradford from Baltimore on Thursday, bolstering their bullpen with a proven postseason pitcher. Tampa Bay claimed the submarining right-hander on waivers, then got him from the Orioles in a trade for a player to be named. Analysis: Bradford, 33, is 3-3 with a 2.45 ERA this year, making 47 relief appearances in 40 1-3 innings. He has a 0.00 ERA in 17 playoff games spanning 15 1-3 innings - no active reliever has pitched more innings in the postseason without giving up a run. Bradford has reached the playoffs with the Chicago White Sox, Oakland, Boston and the New York Mets. He signed a three-year, $10.5 million contract with the Orioles in November 2006. |
| 8/7/2008 | Garrett Mock, SP (Was) | The Nationals recalled Mock from Triple-A Columbus on Thursday after placing outfielder Elijah Dukes on the 15-day disabled list with a right calf strain. He was with the Nationals for Thursday's doubleheader against the Colorado Rockies. |

Analysis: Penny has been on the DL since June 17, retroactive to June 15, with right shoulder tendinitis and bursitis. He made his lone rehabilitation start on Sunday for Triple-A Las Vegas, allowing two runs on six hits in four innings. Penny, 30, won 16 games each of the previous two seasons and was third in the NL Cy Young Award balloting in 2007. This year he's struggled with a 5-9 record and 5.88 ERA in 15 starts. |
| 8/7/2008 | Tom Glavine, SP (Atl) | Barring any setbacks, Glavine - recovering from a torn flexor tendon in his left elbow - said he hopes to return at some point during his club's series versus Arizona, according to the Braves' official Web site. Analysis: After he gave up an earned run and three hits in four innings during a rehab start for Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach on Monday night, Glavine felt encouraged that he could make a start in the next couple of days. He said he felt limited discomfort in that outing, but that it didn't compare to the pain he was feeling two months ago. Glavine, who hasn't pitched since June 10, is 2-3 with a 4.85 ERA in 22 starts this season. |
| 8/7/2008 | Elijah Dukes, RF (Was) | Dukes was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Wednesday, retroactive to Aug. 3, because of a strained right calf, according to the Nationals' official Web site. The outfielder is expected to miss four to six weeks. Analysis: Dukes was hurt on the follow-through of a swing on Saturday in a game versus Cincinnati. It was just his second contest back after missing nearly a month with a knee problem, returning to action in less than four weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a meniscus. "You can't put a time frame on him because he is a quick healer," Nationals manager Manny Acta said. Dukes hit .313 with six homers and 21 RBIs in his last 32 games. |
